The Portman Ritz-Carlton Shanghai
12/01/2003

Police escorts, sidecar sorties into the lesser traveled streets of Shanghai, and romantic candlelit interludes. If it sounds a bit James Bond-ish, all the better, because this is the caper of a lifetime. The assignment, should you choose to accept it, is based upon a pampered two-night stay in a two-bedroom Presidential Suite at the Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai, China. Code name for the mission: “Presidential Bike Pack.”

The adventure begins with a police-escorted limousine ride to the hotel, where you will check into your choice of the Portman Suite or the Greenberg Suite, both rich in Chinese artifacts. Greeting you there will be a bottle of 1993 Taittinger Champagne presented with a set of Baccarat crystal glasses, a chocolate motorcycle carving (lighter and tastier than carbon composite), a personalized Chinese name seal, and other welcoming amenities. At some point, you and your guest will be fitted for custom-made Stefano Ricci leather jackets, which you will design in your choice of colors, collars, buttons, zips, and other accents. These will be ideal for your insider’s tour of the city, conducted by Ritz-Carlton Vice President and Area General Manager Mark DeCocinis. You’ll see Shanghai as few tourists do, from the sidecar of Mr. DeCocinis’ limited-edition Chang Jiang 750 motorcycle, a replica of the 1938 BMW R-71. Take particular note of the leather seats on which you are comfortably perched. They too were created by Stefano Ricci, the renowned Italian designer who upholstered the Lamborghini Diablo’s interior.

Now for the promised candlelit interlude. The dinner hour finds you seated at a quiet table in the award-winning Palladio Italian restaurant, enjoying a menu specially created for you by Chef de cuisine Giovanni Terracciano that is perfectly paired with an exclusive selection of wines. The evening is topped off with complimentary tickets to the famed Shanghai Centre Theatre acrobatic performance. (Click image to enlarge)

The Portman Ritz-Carlton is situated right in the heart of Shanghai’s lively commercial, shopping, and entertainment district on the famous Nanjing Road. Your stay also includes access to the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge, where five daily food and beverage presentations await, along with a fully-equipped health club that includes a swimming pool, gym, and tennis, squash, and racquetball courts.

Once your work in Shanghai is done, you will be presented with a framed photograph, photo album, and serialized certificate of participation as mementos of your motorcycling adventure. Mission accomplished.
