Silver attracted yesteryear’s
prospectors to the Colorado Rockies, but
today’s easy riders cruise
Interstate Highway 70 from Denver to Aspen for their
gold. In fall,
when aspen paint the mountains and valleys in vibrant crimson,
gold,
and orange, the three-hour route strikes the mother lode for the senses.
After passing Vail, turn south down Highway 24 through the former
mining town of
Leadville, and continue through scenic Independence Pass
to Aspen’s Roaring Fork
Valley. Although the 72 miles through the pass
proved arduous for 19th-century
miners, you will travel an enjoyable,
winding path through colorful aspen and
pine along the Roaring Fork
River. Rejuvenate at Aspen’s Little Nell resort,
named for
the Ajax Mountain mining claim which it overlooks. The Little Nell
captures the feel of the Rockies, and offers five-star service, such as
valet
parking for your motorcycle and amenities, including wine
appreciation classes
with master sommelier Richard Betts. After
check-in, unwind beside the
pool—located at the base of Ajax—and take a
swim in 82-degree water. And in case
you find the fresh mountain air
thin, you will find a personal oxygen tank in
your room’s mini bar.
