In 1928 a Harley-Davidson distributor on Long Island, N.Y., asked leather
clothing designer Irving Schott to create a leather jacket that would protect
motorcyclists from the elements. The result was a design that, three-quarters of
a century later, is an icon of motorcycling apparel.
