Yamaha has launched another industry first on the FJR1300AE, its
excellent supersport-tourer. A computer-operated clutch with electronic shift
actuators that entirely eliminate the clutch lever means that the electric-shift
five-speed transmission can make ultra-smooth gear changes using either the left
bar-mounted paddles or the traditional foot-operated lever. But don’t be fooled
into thinking that electric shifting has taken the teeth out of the FJR; the
Yamaha is clearly a sporting machine with 145 hp on tap, a light, rigid aluminum
frame, and a longer swingarm for even better handling and ride characteristics.
But it is also equipped with enough creature comforts to encourage long distance
rides. The height of the thick seat can be adjusted by nearly an inch, and the
handlebar pullback angle has three positions. Luxury amenities include standard
hard side-bags, a bigger, pushbutton-adjustable windscreen, and heated grips.
The Unified Braking System with ABS allows balanced anti-lock braking in all
conditions, and taller overall secondary gearing reduces engine rpm for more
comfortable long-distance cruising. New, sharper-looking bodywork and an
improved air-management system keep the bike and rider cool and
comfortable.
