The new Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 takes its name from the southerly wind that
brings good weather and the beginning of summer to the shores of Lake Como,
Italy, home to the legendary manufacturer. The Breva marks a new generation of
motorcycle emerging from the 80-year old company that, although invoking modern
engineering, retains the unique character traits that have made Moto Guzzi what
it is.
The new Breva is intended to appease the loyal Moto Guzzi fan and
simultaneously attract an entirely new audience to the brand. An upright
motorcycle aimed at versatility, the Breva is a daily commuter that can chase
the sun on weekends and, with color-matched factory panniers and a 6.3-gallon
fuel tank, work as a long-distance touring machine.
While incorporating new
design elements, the Breva still utilizes the industry-unique, laterally mounted
configuration of its 90-degree, air-cooled V-twin engine that has been a
signature of Moto Guzzi since 1967. A new single-sided swingarm encases the
tried-and-true driveshaft that exits from a 6-speed transmission. The 1064cc
powerplant produces 91 hp at 7800 rpm with updated electronics and fuel
injection, with engine vibration being smoothed out by the use of lighter
pistons which reduce crankcase inertia. Not to worry—the Breva still has that
famous Guzzi growl.
The Breva 1100 represents a wind of change blowing in
over a certain lake outside of Milan that is sure to please the loyal while
drawing new enthusiasts to one of Italy’s most revered two-wheeled
treasures.
