John Varvatos launched his own menswear collection in 1999, after leading the men’s design divisions of the two most successful American fashion brands—Calvin Klein and Polo Ralph Lauren. Since then, he has been honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America with the Perry Ellis Award for New Menswear Designer, and twice as Menswear Designer of the Year. He has become known for his sensibility of casual luxury, in addition to his signature detailing and attention to Old World craftsmanship. Following the opening of his New York flagship store were boutiques in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Short Hills, N.J.; and Costa Mesa, Calif.; with others currently planned in major U.S. and international markets.

Tailored suits, sportswear, accessories, footwear, fragrances, skincare and eyewear are included in Varvatos’ collections. There is a limited edition collection of leather jackets, which each season includes a selection of original motorcycle jackets, some of which are numbered to no more than 15. For Spring 2007, the focus is on deconstruction of the garment as well as the fabric, to create a romantic style and an effect of having experienced life. From collars that have been removed to cut-off pocket flaps to unfinished raw-cut selvage and exposed, ripped and re-stitched seams, the collection appears to have been designed for the motorcyclist who has been riding in such garments for years. The motorcycle boots appear to have been stripped and exposed, with a cracked leather finish and rough, solid feeling.

This Varvatos collection accents Old World craftsmanship and exclusively limited editions. (Click image to enlarge)

Varvatos kept most of the colors light and neutral, with etched horn button accents, hand-aged leather blazers, belts and bags. The eyewear collection, produced and distributed by Base Curve, the high fashion optical division of REM Eyewear, enters its second season featuring horn and leather details, temples tipped in Varvatos’ hallmarked pewter and aviators with mocha gradient lenses.
