Recognizing that bike-to-bike communication systems are usually more trouble than they are
worth, we were hesitant to equip ourselves with the ChatterBox GMRS X-1
(888.452.2269, www.chatterboxusa.com) during a recent ride from Los Angeles to
Phoenix (see Soul Survival). After relenting, we assembled the
intimidating array of pieces that spilled from the boxes and fitted the
speakers, microphones, and wires into our helmets. Our efforts proved
worthwhile. Our initial skepticism notwithstanding, the ChatterBox units were
invaluable and enjoyable—except when visiting a Kinko’s, most grown men do not
have an occasion to use the phrase, "Copy that." By employing them, we managed
to keep three bikes and a chase vehicle linked for the entire trip, even after
the trailing bike in our group missed a turn that the rest of us had taken. (Click image to enlarge)
The ChatterBox includes a voice activation feature that
performed well, but we preferred using the more reliable push-to-talk button
because highway-speed wind rush rendered the former difficult to modulate
precisely.
The ChatterBox, which is priced at $330, has a range of about five miles and
features noise-canceling microphones, adequate stereo sound, rechargeable
batteries, access to CB emergency channel 9, and inputs for additional devices
such as music players and cell phones.
