Although motorcycling undeniably has an air of danger, most experienced
riders have learned to minimize the hazards. Part of risk management is proper
safety equipment, and here are two products with designs that expand the
envelope of safety.
Airprotek GP jacket. (Click image to enlarge)
The Airprotek GP jacket takes the airbag concept from the
vehicle and puts it on the rider. In this system, when the rider becomes
separated from his motorcycle, his upper body lands on a cushion of air. The GP
is connected to the motorcycle via a coiled wire attached to an activation
switch. If the rider falls off and the tether disconnected, chambers in the
jacket are inflated by a CO2 cartridge within a half-second. While pleased to
report that we have not tested it in a crash, we have tested the system under
controlled conditions and it does work as claimed.

Flip-up helmets are
notorious for being bulky and noisy, but touring riders wary of the concept
should be ready to reconsider. Shoei helmets excel in their design, and the new
Shoei Multitec is no exception.Sporting an aerodynamic shape that diminishes
both noise and buffeting it also has effective venting, customizable fit and a
locking chin guard that can be easily released with a gloved hand. Plus, the
helmet looks spectacular.
